German insurance coverage firm Allianz stated on Wednesday it doesn’t intend to resume a coverage for the Nord Stream 1 undertaking when it expires in late 2023.
Allianz stated it was a part of an insurance coverage consortium that supplied protection for the pipeline’s 4 European-based minority shareholders.
“The coverage will expire in late 2023, shouldn’t be presently up for renewal, and Allianz doesn’t intend to resume this coverage,” it stated in an announcement on its web site.
“This coverage was underwritten previous to the Russian invasion of Ukraine for a two-year interval and we’re below contractual obligation to our policyholders topic to all sanctions.”
Allianz added that contractual particulars had been confidential issues between the corporate and its prospects and couldn’t disclose any additional particulars.
Sources instructed Reuters that Allianz and Munich Re, one other German firm, had been among the many European insurers that had renewed protection for the broken Russian-controlled Nord Stream 1 fuel pipeline.
In September 2022, a number of unexplained underwater explosions ruptured the Nord Stream 1 and newly constructed Nord Stream 2 pipelines, which prolong from Russia to Germany throughout the Baltic Sea.
